How to approach familiar herbs with respect for tradition, evidence, dosage, and the people who use them.
Natural does not automatically mean risk-free
Herbs have long histories in many cultures, including South Asian households. That history deserves respect, and it also deserves careful questions. A plant's effects can change with the species, preparation, amount, and the person taking it.
Before using an herb as a tea, powder, extract, or supplement, check its identity and source. Be especially cautious if you are pregnant, nursing, preparing for surgery, living with a health condition, or taking prescription or over-the-counter medicine. 'Natural' products can still interact with medicines or cause side effects.
A respectful checklist
- Learn the common and botanical name when possible.
- Use food herbs for flavour without assuming a culinary amount is a therapeutic dose.
- Ask a pharmacist or qualified clinician about interactions before taking a concentrated product.
- Stop and seek help if you notice a concerning reaction.
